Travelling with children

Does Travelicious have family trips?
Travelicious offers a wide range of Family Adventures around the globe. The minimum age (for Family trips) varies depending on destination, and Travelicious has set minimum ages to ensure that the included activities suit each age range. Additionally, you’ll notice that some of the more adventurous destinations have a higher minimum age. Please click here full details and FAQs associated with our Family Adventures.

Travelling in a group

Who are Travelicious travellers?
Travelicious adventures are for travellers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you’re travelling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Travelicious adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Travelicious adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers.

How many people will be on my trip?
Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travellers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?
For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all passengers 70 years and over.

Travelling solo

I’m travelling alone – is that OK?
This is the beauty of the Travelicious style of travel: many of our travellers join because they are travelling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people. Find out more

If I am travelling solo, will I be charged a single supplement?
As a solo traveller, you will be paired up with another passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you’re not comfortable sharing a room with someone of the same gender, you also have the choice to pay for a single supplement (available on the majority of our trips).

If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly.

Room types

Can we book a triple room?
Depending on the trip style you choose, our trips are organised on a twin, triple or multishare basis. As our bookings are made well in advance, individual room requests can’t be guaranteed.

Can I book a single room?
You can book pre and post accommodation on a single basis; however, throughout your Travelicious trip, rooming is organised on a twin-share basis. Some trips do have a single supplement available – check a trip’s overview page on our website, or their Trip Notes, to see whether a single supplement is offered. If so, please request this at the time of booking.

Food, drink and dietary requirements

I have special dietary requirements – will they be catered for?
We will try our very hardest to accommodate all dietary requirements but in some out-of-the-way places it can be very difficult to guarantee. We will let you know if there are places on your itinerary where this is the case. Please let us know at the time of booking of any food requirements or allergies and we’ll pass the information onto your leader. It is also a great idea to bring a card with your dietary requirements written in the local language for those times you are eating away from the group.

What will the food be like on my trip?
Food is one of the most exciting parts of travel. There may be some familiar fare but often you’ll be confronted with the new, interesting and downright weird of the culinary world but we like to think of it as an adventure for all the senses. In addition to this, our flexible itineraries often allow you to eat with the group or branch out on your own – this means you can eat to suit any budget or desire.

Can I drink the water in the countries I visit?
In some destinations it may not be wise to drink the local water. For more details, you can find country-specific information in our fantastic Destination Pages, which can be found in the red menu bar at the top of our home page, or by going to the belo and then choosing the destination you are travelling to.

Customise your trip

Can you customise your holiday?

Want to add flights?
We highly recommend you book your airfares with our office. Not just because we have access to all the best airfares, but there’s some serious advantages in leaving flight bookings to the experts so that you end up in the right place and don’t get caught out mid-trip.

Check the conditions

Check the booking conditions
As travel starts to get on the move again, we’ve been hearted to see many ultimate travel providers, such as airlines, hotels and tour companies, ease their usual booking conditions and offer greater flexibility.

There are however still conditions that you should be aware of before you make a reservation and pay a deposit. We will send you a copy of the conditions for your trip before we confirm your booking.

Please view our current Terms & Booking Conditions and don’t hesitate to let us know if you have any queries.

Get more for your dollar

Make the dollars, pesos & pounds go further?
We’ve gone direct to the travel suppliers, cutting out the middle man, to ensure you get the best value experience possible. Why pay top dollar for your next holiday, when you can enjoy the same experience at the price that the travel operator offers the tour service locally.

There are many great local travel operators around the world that don’t market their services globally. We’ve met many of these reputable travel companies while researching our trips and only work with suppliers who offer top grade customer service and reliable, safe travel experiences.

All our trips are constantly reviewed to ensure that standards are maintained. If you can’t find any testimonials on our website for the trip you are interested in, please ask and we’ll be happy to provide candid feedback from other travellers.

My Travel Experience

Before you depart

It's true what they say about being forewarned is forearmed. The more research and planning you put in before your trip will pay off when you're on the road. We're here to help arm you with all the details you need and information that will help keep you safe.
Before you go
Travel money

What is the currency in my destination? How much should I take in credit cards/cash? Can I use my credit card during my trip?
Money is always a personal thing, but speak to us about your specific trip and we’ll offer some advice. We can let you know the cost for most optional tours and an idea of local expenses so you can budget before you go.

Our general rule of thumb is take a little of everything – some local cash, US dollars as a back-up and at least two cards (preferably one Visa and one Mastercard if you can).

Travellers’ cheques are not common practice anymore in most places, so it is better to travel with a credit card and ATM card, or a bank issued ‘cash card’ specifically for travel. Having a couple of options will assure that you are covered if one doesn’t work – and sadly that does happen at times for no reason! Visa cards are generally more widely accepted than Mastercard, particularly in Cuba where only Visa cards are accepted. But in parts of Europe Mastercard is the card of choice, so it pays to check before you leave and give yourself time to apply for the best cards.

Where do I find my tour brochure?

How do I obtain Trip Notes/itinerary for full details of my trip?
You can view and download the itinerary from the tour pages on our website, under the ‘Brochure & More Info’ tab. Please visit your trip’s specific facts and information so that you are familiar with the details of the tour and holiday inclusions.

We’ll also give you a digital copy before you leave that will have all the latest details and specify any personal amendments for your trip. Make sure you take these away with you.

Travel insurance

Do I need travel insurance?
Short answer is YES. Travel insurance is strongly recommended and should be taken out at the time of booking. For some tours insurance is compulsory and you will be required to provide proof of your travel insurance on the first day of your trip; you will not be able to join the trip without it.

What does my policy need to cover?
At a minimum, your travel insurance should be ‘comprehensive’, providing cover against personal accident, death, medical expenses, emergency repatriation and personal liability. We also strongly recommend it covers cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage and personal effects. If you obtain travel insurance through us, you acknowledge that you are satisfied with the level of insurance we have arranged.

Visa information

How do I find out about the visa requirements for the trip I am interested in?
While we do include information in our trip notes about visa requirements, we always recommend that passengers check with relevant embassies, as visa rules can change without warning. Embassy websites will often have information about requirements for different passport holders and the visa costs.

How do I organise my Visa?
You can contact the embassy directly to obtain the necessary forms. In some cases this can be submitted online or you can apply for an e-visa prior to arrival.

Do you help with Visas?
We can help to make sure you have the necessary travel documentation to apply for any tourist visas, but we are unable to lodge applications on your behalf. If you are uncomfortable with the visa process, we can recommend companies that can arrange this for you at a cost.

My application says I need a letter of invitation or other supporting documentation, do you provide these?
There are certain destinations, such as Central Asia and Russia, where you will need support documentation from My Travel Experience in order to apply for your visa. Once your booking is confirmed we will let you know what you need to send to us (scanned passports, employment letters etc.) so that we can issue you with the necessary documentation.

Safety and medical information

I am concerned about the political stability of a country that my tour visits.
The safety of our passengers, leaders and local operators is a major priority for My Travel Experience. With this in mind, we monitor world events very closely and work with the local operators to make informed decisions based on information from a number of sources, in particular the level of the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade (DFAT) travel advisory via smartraveller.gov.au. If this advisory is at Level 4 ‘Do Not Travel’ then My Travel Experience will notify you of any cancellations or changes to the itinerary to avoid the areas concerned.

How safe are my belongings whilst on the trip?
While many parts of the world are safe to travel in, we recommend that you always act with caution. It’s your responsibility to take all the precautions to make sure your belongings are safe. It’s important to have lockable bags, use hotel safes or other security measures where available, not carry more cash than you need, be cautious about wearing flashy jewellery and consider using money belt or having an anti-theft bag.

What is the best way to carry money?
We recommend having access to money from a variety of sources – cash, cards and travel money cards are all commonly used.

What should I bring?

What type of luggage do you recommend I take?
First and foremost, you should only take with you what you can carry. Suitcases on wheels or lightweight bags make this easier. On some tours porterage is included for up to 2 bags. Other trips, such as Africa safaris and river cruises, only have limited space to store luggage, so large suitcases are not permitted. Whenever there are specific luggage restrictions we’ll let you know on the tour website and in the tour brochure.

Can I store excess luggage at the starting point hotel?
Most starting point hotels can store your excess luggage for you; however, this is at your own risk. A nominal fee may be charged for this service, which would be settled directly with the hotel.

Do I need to bring a sleeping bag?
For most of our tours you don’t need to bring sleeping bags, but if there is a camping trip where this is required we’ll let you know on the tour website and the brochure. In homestays or on overnight trains, some travellers feel more comfortable with their own sleeping bag or sleep sheet. This decision is a personal preference, but we’ll always let you know if bringing your own bedding is essential.

Choosing a trip

My Travel Experience can offer you so many different holiday options, from tours to treks and cruises to rail journeys, even self-drive road trips or fly and flop beach getaways. Treat this website as your starting point to help you narrow down where you want to go or what you want to do, then speak to us about your ideal holiday!
Choosing your trip
Trip style

Which style of trip is right for me?
Let’s start with the big question – and believe us when we say this is big because it could make or break your holiday – what type of trip do you want? Do you want to be looked after on a guided tour, or have the flexibility to find your own way? Do you love that cruising takes care of everything, or can’t stomach the thought of being at sea for days?

To find out which one has ‘You’ written all over it, start with your destination. Then visit our tour pages to spot the different travel categories.

Are trips physically demanding?
Like the idea of lying in a hammock until cocktail hour? We’ve got a beach getaway for that. Want to trek up a mountain at high altitude? We’ve also got an adventure tour that will be just right for you. To determine what type of trip suits you best, we can let you know how physically demanding it is… or isn’t. We’ll always include any warnings on the tour pages if there are physical requirements for a trip.

Travelling with children

Does My Travel Experience offer family trips?
My Travel Experience has a wide range of adventures around the globe, including family-friendly holidays. The minimum age varies depending on the destination and we can help you find a trip that’s most suited to the age range of your family and your preferred style of travel.

Plus, if you have a group of six or more adults all booking on the same tour departure at the same time, make sure you ask us about our special deals!

Travelling in a group

Who are My Travel Experience travellers?
Anyone and everyone! My Travel Experience is about find the right tour match for you or designing an individual itinerary that incorporates everything that you want to see and do. Whether you’re travelling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, My Travel Experience can offer a holiday to suit your interests and comfort level.

How many people will be on my trip?
This varies depending on the tour and we can let you know the maximum numbers before you book. Good things come in small packages, so we have lots of top small group tours. Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can usually carry up to 24 travellers, or in some cases less passengers. There are also options for larger groups, which appeal to many travellers because you have more people to socialise with and it often helps to keep the prices down.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?
Again, this will depend on the tour. Majority of our trips are aimed at travellers between the ages of 15 year and 70 years. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Whenever there is a minimum or maximum age limit, we’ll let you know. It’s worth noting that for senior travellers over 70 years, it’s often necessary to complete a self-assessment form or provide a medical certificate that states you’re fit to travel.

Travelling solo

I’m travelling alone
This is the beauty of My Travel Experience: it’s all about how you want to travel and we can make that happen. Many of our clients travel solo and we’re happy to help you find trips that enable you to meet and share experiences with like-minded people. Find out more

If I am travelling solo, will I be charged a single supplement?
My Travel Experience works with a variety of tour operators, some of which enable solo travellers to share a room with another passenger of the same gender. In this case then you can pay the twin price. If you’re not comfortable sharing a room with someone else, we also have tour operators that offer the choice to pay a single supplement and guarantee your own private room.

If a tour company doesn’t offer the option to share with another traveller, we’ll let you know the cost of the compulsory single supplement prior to any payment being required.

Room types

Can we book a triple room?
Most tours are organised on a twin room basis. Depending on the tour you choose, we can let you know if it’s possible to have triple or interconnecting rooms. In some cases individual room requests can’t be guaranteed, but again we’ll warn you if that’s the case.

Can I book pre-tour accommodation?
My Travel Experience can assist you by booking accommodation before and after any tour. We can try to book the same hotel that you’ll be staying on tour, so you don’t have to swap properties, or we can accommodate any other hotel requests.

Food, drink and dietary requirements

I have special dietary requirements
We will notify any local operators of your dietary requirements. In most cases tour companies will go out of their way to accommodate special diets, but in some out-of-the-way places it can be very difficult to guarantee. We will let you know if there are places on your itinerary where this is the case. Please let us know at the time of booking of any food requirements or allergies and we’ll pass the information onto local tour operators. It can also good to bring a card with your dietary requirements written in the local language, for those times you are eating away from the group.

What will the food be like on my trip?
Food is one of the most exciting parts of travel. There may be some familiar dishes, but it pays to expect the new, interesting and unusual when you’re dining in a different country. In addition to this, many of our tours include some meals with the group and also have days when you can eat wherever it suits your budget and tastes.

Can I drink the water in the countries I visit?
In some destinations it may not be wise to drink the local water. To be honest, you probably don’t want to risk getting sick while you’re away, so drinking bottled water or a safe and more environmentally-friendly alternative is a good rule of thumb.

Trip style

Which style of trip is right for me?
Let’s start with the big question – and believe us when we say this is big because it could make or break your holiday – what type of trip do you want?
